#EverySimpsonsEver -- Day Three

The FXX Simpsons marathon is in full swing! It's still very difficult for me to not just list every episode. I've left out some really great ones. In a couple of cases I chose episodes featuring big musical numbers...

MUST-SEE!

8/23 2:00 AM ET “Krusty Gets Kancelled” -- Filled with guest stars appearing (or, in one case, not appearing) on Krusty's comeback special: Johnny Carson, Hugh Hefner, Bette Midler, Barry White, Luke Perry, Elizabeth Taylor and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

8/23 3:00 AM ET “Cape Feare” -- One of a series of excellent Sideshow Bob episodes.

8/23 4:30 AM ET “Treehouse of Horror IV” -- In one of the tales, Homer sells his soul. For a donut. Mmmm, donuts...where was I? Oh, year. After some family begging the Devil -- Ned Flanders -- agrees to a trial before claiming Homer's soul, and stacks the jury with: Benedict Arnold, John Wilkes Booth, Lizzie Borden, Blackbeard, John Dillinger, Richard Nixon (who was actually still alive at the time this aired)...and "the starting line-up of the 1976 Philadelphia Flyers." But something is wrong with this picture...

8/23 6:00 AM ET “Boy-Scoutz ‘n the Hood” -- If for nothing else but seeing Bart and Milhouse, on a Squishee bender, going crazy...Broadway style!

8/23 6:30 AM ET “The Last Temptation of Homer” -- A new co-worker is attracted to Homer, and he's attracted to her. They are chosen to represent the power plant at a convention in Capitol City. Nary a visit to a Chinese restaurant goes by without me thinking of the fortune cookies from this episode.

8/23 8:30 AM ET “Homer and Apu” -- Again, a musical number is a standout. "Who needs the Kwik-E-Mart?" Apu does. But he's been fired, and replaced by actor James Woods.

8/23 9:30 AM ET “Deep Space Homer” -- "I, for one, welcome our new insect overlords!" Oh, Kent Brockman, don't ever change.

8/23 4:00 PM ET “Treehouse of Horror V” -- One of my favorite Halloween specials, featuring the "Shining" parody and Homer's toaster-turned-time machine.

8/23 5:00 PM ET “Lisa on Ice” -- A hockey episode! Needing to avoid failing gym, Lisa accidentally discovers that she's a stellar goalie. And once she gets into it, look out: “Hey, Milhouse! Knock him down if he’s in your way. Jimbo! Jimbo, go for the face! Look! Ralph Wiggum lost his shin guard. Hack the bone! Hack the bone!” Homer, at first, has a different view: "Lisa, if the Bible has taught us nothing else -- and it hasn't -- it's that girls should stick to girls' sports, such as hot-oil wrestling, foxy boxing, and such-and-such." Bonus quote: "Me fail English? That's unpossible!"

8/23 7:00 PM ET “Homer the Great” -- Stonecutters. 'Nuff said.

8/23 11:00 PM ET “Two Dozen and One Greyhounds” -- In which Santa's Little Helper becomes a father twenty-five times over, and Mr. Burns offers to take all the puppies in...in order to make a tuxedo. Musical standout: "See My Vest."

MEH. M-E-H, MEH.

8/23 12:00 AM ET “So It’s Come to This: A Simpsons Clip Show”
8/23 2:30 PM ET “Another Simpsons Clip Show”

These two are pretty easy. The first is framed by Bart's April Fool's prank on Homer that goes badly (for Homer), and the second by a family discussion of love and romance with similarly-themed clips.

#EverySimpsonsEver -- Day Two

Continuing with my daily summary of what to watch -- or skip -- during the twelve-day Simpsons marathon on FXX...and believe me, at this point the must-see episodes I'm leaving out are killing me!

MUST-SEE!

8/22 1:00 AM ET “Brush with Greatness” -- After seeing some old paintings by Marge (of Ringo Starr, her favorite Beatle, who provides guest vocals) in the attic, Lisa encourages her to take art classes. This leads to Marge's being commissioned to paint a portrait of Mr. Burns for the Springfield Art Gallery.

8/22 3:30 AM ET “Stark Raving Dad” -- Homer is temporarily admitted to a mental hospital because he wore a pink shirt to work. Really. There, he shares a room with a guy who thinks he's Michael Jackson. He doesn't remotely look like MJ (heavyset, white, shaved head) but he sure sounds like the real deal...which he should, since Jackson did the vocals (under an assumed name). However, it seems he used a sound-alike to sing. He only did the speaking parts.

8/22 8:00 AM ET “Flaming Moe’s” -- Moe's bar becomes a huge success after he takes credit for a drink invented by Homer. Speaking of huge, in Bart's prank call to Moe he asked for Hugh Jass. (Get it?) To Bart's shock, Hugh answers.

8/22 9:30 AM ET “Radio Bart” -- Bart plays pranks with a "Mr. Microphone"-type toy, and ends up falling down an abandoned well. A "We Are The World" parody features guest vocals by Sting.

8/22 11:00 AM ET “Bart the Lover” -- One of the best. As revenge for a month's detention, Bart answers Edna Krabappel's personal ad, at one point sending her "his" picture -- a picture of Gordie Howe from a book.

8/22 11:30 AM ET “Homer at the Bat” -- The one with all the MLB stars playing on Mr. Burns' power plant softball team so he can win a bet against Shelbyville's power plant owner. Darrrrrylllll... Darrrrrylllll... And I just read the Wikipedia entry for this episode, which states that one of their first choices for the ballplayers turned them down: one Ryne Sandberg, now Phillies manager. Fire him now.

8/22 4:00 PM ET “A Streetcar Named Marge” -- Marge and Ned Flanders starring in a musical production of A Streetcar Named Desire.

8/22 7:30 PM ET “Mr. Plow” -- "Call Mr. Plow, that's my name, that name again is Mr. Plow." Homer's simple jingle for his snowplow business. Then his competitor, Barney, calls on Linda Ronstadt for his jingle.

8/22 8:00 PM ET “Lisa’s First Word” -- One of the many episodes which flash back to the family's past; of course, that past shifts because the Simpsons never age. This went back to the 1980s. Guest starring Elizabeth Taylor, speaking one word. Wonder how much they paid her?

8/22 9:00 PM ET “Marge vs. the Monorail” -- The episode title kind of explains it all. The late Phil Hartman as Lyle Lanley is brilliant. Then again, he was always excellent. Lionel Hutz, Troy McClure...

8/22 10:30 PM ET “I Love Lisa” -- Ralph Wiggum loves Lisa after she gives him a pity card on Valentine's Day. "So...do you...like...stuff?"

MEH. M-E-H, MEH.

8/22 7:30 AM ET – “Saturdays of Thunder”
8/22 2:00 PM ET – “The Otto Show”

Again, not that these are necessarily bad. And even the worst episodes have at least some moments of humor.

Elizabeth Taylor

Almost non-stop since I heard the news that Elizabeth Taylor passed away, Michael Jackson's song "Leave Me Alone" has been stuck in my head. Of course, that's because of the music video...

In the midst of the surreal carnival ride, there's Michael's "shrine to Liz," and there she is in all her ageless beauty.

Her most iconic movie roles took place before I really began to watch a lot of movies, so I can't really speak about her acting career. For me, she's defined by her powerful advocacy in the fight against AIDS, dating back to the days when the stigma and prejudice was so extreme.

On a less important level, she's defined by a lot of the pop culture buzz that sprang forth from her life. Her many marriages. (Richard Burton, okay, but Larry Fortensky? Really?) Her illnesses. Her treatment at the Betty Ford Clinic. Her weight. Her appearances on "The Simpsons." And, of course, her friendship with Michael Jackson.

Rest in peace, Liz.
